With more than a decade of international broadcasting experience, the Toronto native first joined CP24 in September 2020 on a maternity leave contract, and soon started filling in to host and anchor on CP24 Breakfast. She officially joined the breakfast team in November 2021.
Hsiung has covered a wide range of breaking news stories both at home and abroad – from the COVID-19 pandemic, to the U.S. Presidential election followed by the January 6th Capitol Hill riots, to the war in Ukraine. She has also interviewed several political figures and celebrities during her time at CP24. Hsiung also hosted the St. Patrick’s Day parade in 2022 – the first major in-person event to resume in Toronto since the start of the pandemic.
Hsiung moved back to Toronto from Beijing, China in 2008. Hsiung worked as both a sports anchor and entertainment host for the English-language network of the world’s largest broadcaster, China Central Television. When she was 23, she became the station’s youngest sports anchor, and in the summer of 2008, she covered the country’s first-ever summer Olympics, and enhanced exposure to the Games by being one of the first few to report from many of Beijing’s newly constructed Olympic venues, such as the iconic Bird’s Nest Stadium and The Water Cube. Hsiung also anchored CGTN’s flagship arts and entertainment program, Culture Express. She has conducted exclusive interviews with some of the world’s top sports and entertainment figures such as Kobe Bryant, Yao Ming, Stephon Marbury and American-born Chinese “King of Pop” Wang Leehom.
In 2015, the mother of three boys (who has always had a passion for performance arts) started pursuing stand-up comedy in Beijing and had early success. Hsiung made her televised comedy debut on Season 3 of Comedy Central’s Stand Up Asia!, alongside Montreal’s Sugar Sammy. It premiered in August 2018 in 19 countries across Asia. Two months after giving birth to her third son she competed in the 2017 Hong Kong International Comedy Competition and was the only female to reach the finals. In 2020, Hsiung won the iHeart Comedy Award for Best Newcomer Comic in Toronto.
Hsiung has also been sought after to host and emcee major events. In 2018, she served as emcee and moderator for the YPO (Young President’s Organization) “Edge” Global conference in Singapore, which was attended by guests and speakers such as Billie Jean King, the Prime Minister of Singapore and The Queen of Jordan.
Hsiung lives with her three sons and husband David Shoemaker in the city. She enjoys bread baskets (preferably free), ice cream, watching films, dancing, skiing, painting and playing the guitar. Hsiung is also a bit of a fitness fanatic. She ran her first marathon in Shanghai in 2016 and participated in the Scotiabank half marathon in 2019.
